A pragmatic architecture for scraping at scale

Queues, retries, proxy budgets and the boring reliability work that separates a weekend script from a system that runs for years.

Scraping one page is easy. Scraping ten million pages a day, every day, without a human babysitting it is an exercise in reliability engineering. The proxy is one component; the system around it matters more.

Separate fetching from parsing

Put a durable queue between the thing that downloads pages and the thing that extracts data. When a parser bug ships, you reprocess from stored HTML instead of re-fetching — saving bandwidth and avoiding extra load on the target.

Budget your proxy spend per job

  • Cap retries per URL — infinite retries on a dead page quietly drain gigabytes.
  • Track success rate per target and alert when it drops; that's your earliest signal of a layout or anti-bot change.
  • Prefer the cheapest IP type that works (see our residential-vs-datacenter guide) and only escalate per-target.

None of this is glamorous. All of it is the difference between a pipeline you trust and one you restart every Monday.
