# Residential vs. datacenter proxies: which one should you actually use?

Datacenter IPs are faster and cheaper; residential IPs are harder to block. The right answer is almost always 'it depends on the target' — here's a framework for deciding without guessing.

Every team that buys proxies eventually asks the same question: do I need residential IPs, or will datacenter do? The honest answer is that it depends entirely on what you're connecting to — and on how much that target invests in detecting automated traffic.

## The short version

Datacenter proxies are IPs that originate from hosting providers. They're fast, cheap, and abundant — but their address ranges are well known, so sophisticated targets can block them wholesale. Residential proxies route through real consumer connections, which makes them far harder to distinguish from ordinary users, at the cost of higher latency and price.

## A decision framework

- Start with datacenter. If the target doesn't block you, you've saved money and latency.
- Move to residential when you see IP-based blocks, CAPTCHAs that never clear, or geo-walls you can't pass.
- Use static ISP proxies when you need residential trust but also session stability — account-bound workflows, for example.
- Reserve mobile proxies for the hardest targets, where carrier-grade NAT makes IPs effectively un-blockable.

> Pick the cheapest IP type that the target will actually accept. Over-provisioning trust is just burning money.

## Don't forget the request, not just the IP

An expensive residential IP won't save a request that leaks automation in its headers, TLS fingerprint, or timing. Before you upgrade IP types, make sure the rest of your client looks human. We see teams double their proxy spend to fix problems a better HTTP client would have solved for free.
